Thought I'd try a another drawing of Empowered, (The titular* heroine of Empowered Special #4: Animal Style--coming to a comic store near you this coming June 5th!) carrying that darned dragster engine.

This time I thought I'd forgo the gratuitous rear shot of my previous attempt. At the very least, our heroine would probably appreciate it. ;)

*Hee-hee. I said "Titular". :D

Enjoyed seeing this, John...great work! No worries about the pitch...know that you've sold at least two! I pre-ordered a couple weeks ago to show my support for another child of the 80's who grew up on arena rock, anime on TV after school (Robotech Macross, Voltron, Battle of the Planets) and GI Joe. Happy to support your work because I so appreciate your El Hazard, Bubble Gum Crisis and Ninja High School pieces here. I go back a few years in the fandom myself, as I gladly bought Warren's earlier work; I have copies of Dirty Pair: Dangerous Acquaintances and BGC: Grand Mal. These days I have about as much hair left on my head as Destro!

Heh. I'm sure Asrial from NHS could find a chassis in short order that power plant would look right at home in. Engines I work on don't have as much horsepower but a LOT more torque, with cylinders I can fit my whole head into!

Thanks.

I'm glad that there is still someone out there who appreciates the apex of anime as an art form. When I first posted on DA, I got a lot of compliments for being "retro", which prompted me to check out a lot of the new offerings in anime and animation in general, in the hopes of updating my "look". (Of course DVD and the internet make such research far easier than back in the days of shady, back room, 4th generation VHS tapes. ;))

While technically more advanced, I find myself not as inspired by a lot of modern anime, with its never ending glut of emo boys, loli girls, excorcisms, zombies, and infinitely repeating ki-battles , complete with color commentary.

"Oh no Obinowashi has just struck Toji with his spiraling fist! No one can withstand that much ki at one time."

Worry not, Lilli! Toji will prevail. He has yet to show his TRUE POWER!"

I miss the bold decisive characters. I miss the guitar riffs, and I miss the all important robots and mecha that look like they could actually be built.

I honestly don't know if I'll find a modern audience, but as I work to get published more and more, I hope to do stories reminiscent of the things that inspired me so many years ago.

And I'll bet your Destro look kicks ass. ;)

Certainly know where you're coming from, John. My first experience with Bubble Gum Crisis was on a fifth-generation fansub with about as much snow on the tape as a look outside my dorm window on a winter's day (and I went to college in Michigan's Upper Peninsula!) circa NINETEEN EIGHTY NINE. (Yes, I did like BGC 2040 but I'm talking about the original here from 1987!) AND WE LIKED IT! Kids these days don't know how good they've got it.

And one of my recent favorites that harkens back a lot to all of the old school virtues you extoll here is Gurren Lagann. It's what got me back on the wagon, in fact. And in my nearly thirty years in the fandom, it's the one that got me hands-down the most emotionally worked up. It is that good! Very powerful piece that I strongly recommend with a surprising relevant message during these trying times.

"That's odd. It was "vrooming" like crazy when it was in that shiny wheeled thing where I found it."
